Math Vocabulary

A

Absolute Value
The distance between a number and 0 on a number line. Absolute value bars are usually represented with |x|.

Acute Angle
An angle whose measure is less than 90 degrees.

Acute Triangle
A triangle whose angles all measure less than 90 degrees.

Addition Property of Inequality
For all numbers "a", "b", and "c", if a > b, then a + c > b + c and if a
Addition Property of Equality
Adding the same number to each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation. If a = b, then a + c = b + c.

Additive Identity Property
For any number "a" , a + 0 = 0 + a = a

Additive Inverse Property
For any number "a", a + (-a) = 0

Adjacent

Next to.

Algebraic Expression
An expression that includes one or more numbers and variables along with at least one arithmetic operation.

Algebraic Model
An algebraic expression or equation used to represent a real-life situation.

Algorithm

A step-by-step method for computing.

Angle
A figure formed by two rays that begin at the same point.

Area
A measure of how much surface is covered by a figure.

Associative Property
For any numbers "a", "b", and "c", (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) and (ab)c = a(bc)

Average
The sum of a set of numbers divided by how many numbers are in the set. Also called the mean.

Axes
Two perpendicular number lines used to locate points on a coordinate plane
